Marknad / Craft fair

Satt och spann i helgen i Skellefteå och visade hur en gammal spinnrock fungerar. Jag hade förväntat mig regn och rusk men vi hade sådan tur att det var soligt hela helgen.

I was spinning in Skellefteå this weekend and showed the visitors how an old spinning wheel works. I had been expecting rain and low temperatures but was greatly surprised when the whole weekend turned out sunny.

Räd i lagret / Stash-raid

Hittade ett trevligt litet mönster (French-sleeve Bolero) på Ravelry som jag ville göra men på grund av liten inkomst (hej student!) så blev jag tvungen att gå igenom mitt lilla lager och tur var väl det! Hittade fyra härvor Drops Lace som en lokal garnbutik sålde ut billigt efter att Garnstudios försäljningspolicy krossat dem totalt. Det handlar så klart om de återkommande kampanjerna som ställer till det för de små företagen. Om jag inte missminner mig så sade chefen något i stil med "Nu ska skiten ut!" och satte 50% på allt de hade från Garnstudio.


Mönstret är fint men det är på japanska, definitivt för litet för mig och garnet jag valde att använda är inte i samma tjocklek så det blev till att göra om det lite. Efter 15 minuter med papper och penna så gav jag upp och gjorde uträkningen i Excel istället, så mycket lättare och snabbare!


I found a cute pattern (French-sleeve Bolero) on Ravelry the other day but as my income is small (hello there student!) I had to go trough my stash instead of buying a similar yarn  and that was not a bad idea! Deep down in a bag I found four hanks of Drops Lace that a local yarn shop put on sale the other year after getting pissed off for the last time. As usual it is all about Drops/Garnstudios returning sales campaigns which makes it hard for small shops to get a steady income by sellin their yarn. If I recall it correctly the owner said something in the style of "I am getting rid of all this shit!" and put it all on sale for 50% of the original price.

The pattern is beautiful but in Japanese, too small, and made out of another kind of yarn so I had to adjust it a bit. After trying to calculate it with a pen and a piece of paper for 15 minutes I gave up and did it in Excel instead, so much faster and definitely much easier!

Spinner ullen / Spinning the wool

Spinner ullen jag visade förut, är lite ovan den fina kvaliteten men det går det också.

Spinning the wool I showed you before, I am a bit unused to the fine quality (it is a bit too soft) but I do not doubt that it will turn out good in the end.

Midnattsull / Midnight-wool

Äntligen ska jag få börja spinna igen! Här syns en merino- silke-blandning i färgerna rosa, lila, brun och blått. Trots att det är så uselt väder så är det underbara färger på himelen mitt i natten nu, solen går aldrig riktigt ner så det blir några timmar av undrebara färger.

Finally I have some time to spin yarn again! Here you can see a merino- silk-mix in pink, purple, brown and blue. Despite the horrible weather we have beautiful nights now with a lot of pink, blue and purple colours. This time of the year the sun does not really set so we have a few hours every night with almost magical colours.

Sommar? / Summer?

Reste som sagt hem för sommaren och det blev något av en chock. Från sol och värme i söder (+25C) till regn och kyla i norr (+5C), vilken tur att jag packade mina ylletröjor!

Som om det inte vore nog så började det faktiskt snöa en dag, det smälte dock bort på marken men det var snö. I och med att jag ska vara med på en marknad (ute) där jag ska visa hur man spinner ull så riskerar det kalla vädret att ställa till det något för mig. För att ge mig bästa möjliga förutsättningar så måste jag se till att jag inte fryser och speciellt noga är det om händerna.

Som tur var så hittade jag ett projekt jag satte igång i höstas, ett par halvvantar i alpacka. Från början var halvvantarna sänkta att ha när jag pluggar i det kalla biblioteket men de blir nog inte så dumma att ha när jag spinner heller (hoppas jag).


I went home to the north the other week and the weather came as a chock. From the sun and warmth in the south (+25C) to the rain and cold in the north (+5C), I am so happy that I packed my wool sweaters!

As if that were not enough it actually started to snow the other day, it did melt as soon as it hit the ground but it was snowing nevertheless. Since I am supposed to demonstrate how to spin at a craft fair (outside) the weather scares me a bit. I will have to make the best of it and one of the most important things is that my hands will not freeze.

Some times I am lucky, I found a project I started last autumn; a pair of fingerless gloves made out of alpaca yarn. They were planned to be used when studying in the library but I think that they will also be perfect when spinning yarn outside (well, that is what I hope at least).

Gratis garn / Free yarn

Textilhögskolan flyttade i höstas och när lagerlokalerna blev mindre så fick de inte plats med allt vilket innebar Gratis Garn! Gick igenom allt som skulle slängas bort (det var mycket) och hittade några kilo 38/2 som är skrämmande tunt, det måste nästan bli någon sorts spets men tills vidare får det vila.

Garnet kom på kon och är därför ohyggligt otympligt så jag lämnade kvar det i lägenheten för sommaren, kommer ändå inte ha tid att göra något av det innan hösten.


The Swedish School of Textiles moved last autumn and since the storage got smaller they had to get rid of some yarn and that meant Free Yarn! I went trough it all (it was a lot of yarn) and found a few kilogrammes of wool yarn 38/2. The yarn is really thin and I do not have any idea of what I will make out of it, definitely some kind of lace but it will have to wait.

The yarn came on cones and therefore is it quite hard to transport so I had to leave it in my flat, I will not have time to make something out of it this summer anyway.

Broscher i Kil / Broches in Kil

Kofta i Noro / Cardigan made out of Noro

Så blev jag äntligen klar med lilla koftan i Noro Sock yarn men självklart brast det lite i budgeten för den. Med två varv kvar tog garnet slut och jag tvingades köpa ett till nystan (som jag kommer sticka en till liten kofta av).

Finally I have finished the baby cardigan that I knitted out of Noro sock yarn. Unfortunately one skein was not enough and with only two rows to go the yarn was all used and I had to buy another skein to finish the project (I will use the rest of it to knit another one).

Textilmuseet, det var öppet! - Textile Museum, it was open!

Helgen som var hade jag tråkigt och bestämde mig för att cykla runt i Borås (mest för att jag ville komma åt högskolans WiFi) och satte mig utanför Textilhögskolans nya lokaler då det är så vackert där. Det är gräs, statyer, blommor, buskage och några träd, och inte blir det sämre av att några av bänkarna ligger i lä.

När jag sitter där utanför så tänker jag att de var ju synd att museet inte var öppet då jag inte haft möjlighet att besöka det i och med att det varit så mycket skolarbete. Jag sitter där och gräms över att jag inte besökt museet så ser jag hur det rör sig inne i huset, det kan väl ändå inte vara rätt då dörrarna är låsta tänker jag och går närmare. Jo dörrarna är helt låsta men som tur är har jag ett passerkort in (Textilhögskolan använder samma ingång) så jag smyger in och fram till museets reception för att fråga om det är en privat visning eller om det är öppet, det var öppet.

Nog är det lite konstigt att ingången (åtminstone dessa dörrar) var helt låsta och att det enda sättet för en vanlig besökare att ta sig in var att smyga igenom fiket. Påtalade detta men kvinnan i receptionen svarade att ingången inte var hennes ansvar, när jag skulle gå ut igen hade problemet inte åtgärdats så jag fick släppa in några besökare som stod och stampade utanför. Detta är inte bra marknadsföring för Textilmuseet då de verkar vilja motverka besök från privatpersoner, undrar hur länge det tar innan ledningen ser de dåliga siffrorna för helgerna...


The weekend was boring so I decided to go bicycling (the laid back kind of bicycling, not the one with spandex pants) to the University of Borås (students at the school have free WiFi there). I do not often sit down outside the new building for the Swedish School of Textiles but as the weather was nice and the surroundings was beautiful I chose to go there. The surroundings are so much better than at the old place, the new building have grass, flowers, shrubberies, trees, and a lot of statues, which is so much better than before.

As I sat there I started thinking about how I wanted to visit the Textile Museum within the building but that it must be closed since the doors were all locked. I took a peek inside and suddenly I see how there are people inside the museum, how could that be? Since the Textile School has the same entrance I took my access card and went inside to ask if it was a open for the public, it was.

Is it not a bit odd that the museum was open but that the entrance locked and that the only way for an ordinary visitor to get inside was to walk trough a café? Well, I told that to the lady in the museum but she answered with the snarky remark that the entrance was not her responsibility. When I left the museum the doors were still locked so I locked open the door to let some of the visitors in (it was even locked from the inside!). I wonder how long it will take for the management to realise that the numbers from the weekends seem to be odd...

I museet upplever jag att det blivit en viss förändring och jag vet inte om det blivit till det bättre... De stora lokalerna hade alldeles för få utställningar och den upplevelse jag fick var stora (tomma) ytor och att resten var lekstuga. Jag kanske är lite väl hård men det var inte ett museum för de som kan något om textil utan för de som är noviser i ämnet, kanske blir det bättre när de öppnar maskinhallen med de gamla industrimaskinerna.

Inside the museum I feel that they have changed quite a bit from before but I am not sure if the changes have made it better... The museum left me with the feeling that there was few exhibitions, a lot of open space, and the rest seemed to be DIY for kids. I might be a bit harsh but this is not a museum for those who have textile knowledge but more for the novices, maybe this will change as the part with the industrial machines opens. 

En Pläd / A blanket

Nu har Nellys Outlet öppnat för sommaren här i Borås och självklart kilade jag förbi på öppningsdagen, den dagen det är som mest folk... Målet med utflykten var att hitta en snygg herrskjorta i bra material billigt, det var kanske en aning optimistiskt, så självklart hittade jag inget av något större värde förutom min nya pläd.

Kön var cirka 40 minuter lång(!) och hade det inte varit för att jag smart nog utrustat mig med en vattenflaska och några podcasts så skulle jag nog inte klarat av det, jag såg flera som var nära att få nervösa sammanbrott. Där stod jag i kön och såg en dam framför mig lämna korgen i kön och kika runt under tiden kön ändå knappt rörde sig. Plötsligt hittar hon något svart inslaget i plast, fult inslaget, och det visade sig vara en ullpläd! När kön rörde sig förbi där hon hittat den så plockade jag upp en också, en svart pläd 140-150 gånger 165 för 100 kronor! Den är knappast i den dyraste kvalitén men helt klart värd sitt pris då den var i 100% ull.

Nu har den fått hänga till sig lite och vädras, den luktade ruskigt mycket malmedel (eller så är jag bara överkänslig), och det innebär att jag nu kan börja med mitt projekt (om jag vill). De senaste åren har jag drömt om att få brodera en pläd men att ge sig på mammas handvävda kändes inte riktigt rätt. Projektet kommer nog få ligga i dvala över sommaren då det kan bli trångt i resväskan när jag ska åka hem.


Nelly's outlet have finally opened here in the small town of Borås and of cause I went there the first day, the day with the most people... The goal was to find a good quality shirt, it was maybe a bit optimistic and therefore I did not find anything with greater value except my new blanket.

I had to stand in line for close to 40 minutes(!) and had it not been for the temperature that day I would not have taken my bottle of water and a few podcasts for the bicycle trip with me I would have been both thirsty and bored to death. I saw a lot of people close to getting a nervous breakdown. Well, after a while one woman in front of me left her cart for a small while, no big deal since the line was barely moving, and looked at the goods around the line. As I was just standing there I kept an eye on what she was doing, it was far more interesting than just standing there in the line and looking at peoples carts, and suddenly she found something interesting. She picked up a big package badly wrapped in plastic which turned out to be a blanket. As the line passed where she had looked I took a peak at the blankets and found out that they were made of 100% wool and only costed 100 SEK ( around 10 EURO / 15 USD). I think that it is about 140-150 times 165 centimetres and that is not a bad price for a 100% wool blanket. I doubt that it is the best quality but it is still a good price.

Now I have let it hang outside for a few days, the smell of moth deterrent was awful, but now can I finally start with my project (if I want to). The last few years I have wanted to embroider a blanket but to kidnap one of my mothers handwoven ones have always seemed to be a bit disrespectful. This project might hibernate during summer as I doubt that I have the room fore it in my suitcase.
